A keen eye for detail and a drive to ask the right questions can shape an entire career.
That was the case for Mark Ruffin, whose journey began as a mechanical engineering intern at the bp Carson Refinery. A simple observation about inconsistencies in heat exchanger gaskets sparked a curiosity that led to two decades of expertise in bolted flange joints. From revamping bolting programs to becoming a SME for major O&G companies, this passion for precision ultimately led to a leadership role with global sealing solutions provider, TEADIT®.
What inspired you to pursue your current career path? What advice do you have for someone aspiring to follow a similar trajectory?
I have always enjoyed working on mechanical things. My father was the turnaround and routine maintenance planner at an oil major’s cogeneration unit. Becoming a mechanical engineer allowed me to work on machinery, which was my initial interest, and expand my interests into what I do today.
What are your goals for your position?
I’m working primarily to strengthen our market position in North America, build deeper relationships with customers and ensure our sales strategies align with industry needs and trends. I also focus on coaching and developing our sales team to drive longterm success.
What’s the latest news at your company?
We are expanding our capabilities and product lines to better serve our customers in the refining, chemical and energy industries, while reinforcing our commitment to reliability, safety and sustainability.
How do you plan to address changes in the coming year?
We are continuously adapting to market shifts by investing in sustainable solutions, improving operational efficiencies and reacting quickly to regulatory changes. TEADIT adopts new technology to help prepare for the changeover of an aging workforce and implements strategic succession plans. Our sealing products play a key role in reducing fugitive emissions, which is a priority for many of our customers in the energy sector.
What mentors or role models have had a profound impact on your career?
I’ve had several mentors throughout my career. Everyone from my parents and brother, to almost every boss I have ever had. My two bosses at TEADIT have taught me the most with respect to my professional life. Chris Day and Robbie Rigs have mentored me, helping me transition from an engineering mindset to understanding the operations of a sales organization. They taught me that you can go to work every day and enjoy what you do because of the work and the people around you. The team that Chris and Robbie put together is the best in which I have ever worked.
What do you find most fulfilling about your work?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is helping engineers and salespeople succeed. Whether it’s mentoring engineers so they can solve their sealing issues or equipping our sales team with the tools and knowledge they need to support customers effectively, I enjoy seeing others achieve their goals. When our team and customers succeed, we all win.
If you could choose a superpower to make your work life easier, what would it be?
The superpower I would like to have most would be the ability to instantly recognize and unlock the full potential of the TEADIT team. We have many talented people who are absolutely amazing and it’s my duty in this role is to help them unlock all of their potential.
