ExxonMobil is planning a shutdown of the second-largest crude distillation unit (CDU) at its 584,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Baytown, Texas, refinery by late next week.
The 135,000-bpd Pipestill-7 CDU is being temporarily shut for a planned maintenance, said a spokesperson with ExxonMobil.
The Baytown refinery, Exxon's largest in the United States and the fourth largest in the nation, continues to operate at reduced production levels following a Dec. 23 explosion in which four contractors were injured.
Recently commenting in a Twitter statement, Rohan Davis, ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery manager, said the incident was still under investigation.
"We are committed to finding out what happened through a full and thorough investigation and continue to cooperate with authorities," said Davis. "Taking the time to thoroughly investigate any cause or causes is essential. We thank you all for your continued patience and understanding."
Founded in 1919, the Baytown refinery began operations in 1920, celebrating its 100th anniversary three years ago.
