Marathon Petroleum Senior Vice President of Refining Richard D. Bedell told analysts and investors Wednesday Marathon is evaluating a residual hydrocracker project at its refinery in Garyville, La. Bedell said the project would allow the facility to upgrade residual to ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) and gas oil and expand its ULSD capacity by 28,000 barrels per day. "The economics are driven by a large spread between ULSD and low-value resid,” Bedell said at his company’s analyst/investor day. Marathon expects to complete an ongoing project that will expand Garyville’s current hydrocracker capacity to 110,000 bpd in the first quarter of next year.
