CHS Inc. will proceed with a plan to build a $3 billion fertilizer manufacturing plant in Spiritwood, N.D., the company announced on Friday. CHS is currently the sole investor on the project, which the company said would be the largest private investment project ever undertaken in North Dakota. CHS intends to begin production at the new plant in the first half of 2018.
The plant will produce 2,400 tons of ammonia per day. CHS President and CEO Carl Casale said building the plant would ensure a reliable domestic supply of fertilizers to the company’s member-owners, which include farmers, ranchers and cooperatives.
CHS also announced last week it would spend $406 million to boost diesel production and crude throughput at its Laurel, Mont., refinery.
