Celanese and Mitsui have entered into an agreement to explore building a 1.3-million-tons-per-year methanol unit at Celanese’s plant in Bishop, Texas. Celanese has filed for air permits with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the unit. The firms will evaluate construction costs and methanol market conditions before making a final investment decision.
Celanese also agreed to purchase methanol from Mitsui from the firms’ joint venture unit under construction in Clear Lake, Texas, for a five-year period. The unit is expected to start up in October.
