Duke Energy has agreed to acquire Piedmont Natural Gas, which serves one million customers in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, for $4.9 billion. The two companies are partners in the $5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which will be the first major natural gas pipeline to serve eastern North Carolina.
Piedmont will retain its name and operate as a business unit of Duke Energy. The transaction is expected to close by the end of next year.
