An appeals court on Tuesday ruled the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) program would stay in place during an ongoing EPA review. Via Platts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected an appeal by several utilities and states to put the program on hold as the agency reviews the costs associated with its implementation. The Supreme Court in June ordered the EPA to review the rule — a process the agency said would be complete by April 16, 2016.
The Energy Information Administration estimates the MATS rule will result in the retirement of 60 gigawatts of coal-fired power generation in the U.S. by 2020.
