The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) today approved the use of air guns and sonic cannons to search for oil off the East Coast. The move paves the way for the first oil and gas data collection on the Eastern Seaboard in nearly 40 years and possible drilling next decade.
“The bureau’s decision reflects a carefully analyzed and balanced approach that will allow us to increase our understanding of potential offshore resources while protecting the human, marine and coastal environments,” acting BOEM Director Walter Cruickshank said in a statement.
Via FuelFix, geophysical research companies will have to apply for individual permits to collect data and will be subject to rigorous environmental scrutiny. Nine companies have told BOEM they want to conduct research.
