Representatives from Shell and the United Steelworkers union resumed contract negotiations on Monday — one day after refinery workers staged their biggest strike since 1980. Via FuelFix, union officials said while wages are a major point of contention, the workers are more concerned with protections against forced overtime, health and safety improvements and retaining work that is typically given to non-union contractors.
The strike began Sunday after the union rejected five contract renewal offers from Shell. Nine refineries and chemical plants were affected by the work stoppage. Other facilities are operating under rolling 24-hour contract extensions.
