Dimensional Services Inc. was founded in 2005 by William Bonner, a pioneer in laser scanning and tracking for reverse engineering and other 3-D metrology applications. The company has since grown to become a full-service team of specialized consulting engineers. BIC Magazine recently spoke with Bonner to learn more about his company’s innovations, history and growth.
Q: What led you to start Dimensional Services?
A: I had been working with laser scanning/tracking technology since its innovator phase in the early 1990s. I gained a lot of business experience starting four new business units for three different companies. When I realized the impact high-tech metrology could have on almost every industry, I knew it was something I wanted to spearhead. Investing a big chunk in the first purchase of the high-accuracy equipment needed was a risk I took. I got involved with an aircraft company that had countless aircraft hangars solely designated for storing their master models, which were almost half a century old and in very poor condition. I developed a process for converting the physical models to electronic data. Once the management team and the Federal Aviation Administration approved the process, we were awarded our first large project, which was very successful. What better motivation to keep going?
Q: What is the biggest news in your company right now?
A: Our biggest news is growth, which we have achieved simply by word-of-mouth recommendations. In addition to the steady growth of our company, we have the pleasure of sharing the growth of our tight-knit “business family.” We have employees who are expecting their first children, growing existing families, building or buying their first homes, or recently getting married or engaged. Growth is exciting!
Q: Why is Dimensional Services successful?
A: Most important is the dedication and excellence of our employees. They’re a fine group of passionate individuals who thrive on the challenge of finding best-fit solutions for our customers. Everyone has an incredible amount of experience and project diversity. The ability to apply that knowledge to every project equips our crew to think outside the box and be successful in doing so.
Our management team is quick to respond, always flexible to accommodate changing requirements and has great synergy with our crew to ensure perfect execution.
The second component is our appetite for challenges, not shying away from complex problems that may require a new approach from a 360-degree perspective, which leads to a very crucial component: reputation and trust. We have worked very hard to earn an impeccable reputation and high respect in our niche industry, and will continue to differentiate ourselves simply by being the best in what we do.
Q: What surprised you most about your company once it took off?
A: What surprised me and continues to is the impact we have on so many large companies. We change the way they’ve done things for decades by introducing them to the benefits of 21st century technology. We are always developing new methods to replace antiquated processes that improve the three most important categories: safety, time and accuracy.
Q: What are you reading right now?
A: “People Over Profit.” Once I read the title, I was intrigued. It reinforced my belief being authentic, transparent and generous doesn’t mean people over no profit. Yes, it is a fact companies have to be profitable to stay in business and succeed. But these values have to be brought into the fold. I think we’ve built a company everyone’s not only proud but also excited to be a part of. “Generosity must be built in, not tacked on.” — Dale Partridge.
