Through project execution and leading safety management, a Houston-based company is currently engaged in and has been awarded four individual bid packages — site work and underground utilities, piling, concrete and railroad — for a major expansion project.
Each project phase, for a top-tier chemical manufacturer on the Gulf Coast, was tendered separately for bidding.
Carlysle Gulledge, project director with Standard Constructors (SCI), said winning the site work package was extremely competitive and challenging. However, SCI secured the award from the client based on its past project performance with them.
"Most of our competitors are not multi-disciplined like we are, which in this case gave us a competitive advantage since we are already established onsite with cross-trained craftsmen," Gulledge said. "We have spent significant time and resources to develop a true cross-trained, multi-craft workforce where someone will be an ace equipment operator, a certified high-density polyethylene fusion welder or pile driving operator — and still be able to do skilled concrete form carpentry work."
SCI was subsequently awarded the civil scope of the project based on competitive pricing, high quality project execution and its safety performance for the owner. The civil scope included over 20,000 cubic yards (cy) of concrete with numerous large sumps, cooling towers, paving and pipe racks, among others. One foundation had a single pour of over 2,000 cy, or about 200 loads of concrete, which set a new company record for total cubic yards placed for a single foundation. It also included setting over 2,000 anchor bolts.
The project also included 350,000 cy of excavation and backfill, 12,000 linear feet of firewater piping, 800 concrete piles, four sheet pile sumps, over 20,000 cy of structural concrete and paving and 26,000 track feet of railroad systems to install. This illustrates SCI’s consistent commitment to excellence in professional and project execution. This dedication stems from its emphasis on personnel and the continual pursuit of improvement.
A Louisiana State University graduate, Gulledge, who is the fourth generation in this family business, manages the day-today operations of all projects, overseeing estimating and project execution.
"I’m in it from the negotiating table through project closeout — the full lifecycle of the project," Gulledge said. "We are a relationship-based company, and owners recognize that our multi-disciplined skillset creates significant cost savings and schedule efficiencies by having a single contractor handle multiple phases consecutively." He also mentioned that having just one contractor to deal with reduces the owner’s burden in managing the project.
