Thailand-based Indorama Ventures will spend $175 million to renovate and restart a dormant ethane cracker in Carlyss, Louisiana. Louisiana Economic Development said in a news release on Wednesday the project would produce 370,000 metric tons of ethylene and 30,000 metric tons of propylene per year. Indorama said it expects to start operations by the end of 2017.
The project will create 125 new direct jobs and an additional 481 new indirect jobs. Indorama estimates the project will create up to 600 construction jobs during peak building activity.
Indorama currently operates petrochemical manufacturing sites in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
