Michigan regulators are set to approve an emissions increase at Marathon’s Detroit refinery, paving the way for a proposed refinery modernization and expansion project. Via the Detroit Free Press, the proposal would increase sulfur dioxide emissions by 22 tons per year in an EPA non-attainment zone. Marathon is planning to upgrade the refinery to produce low-sulfur gasoline in compliance with the EPA’s Tier 3 standards, which take effect next year.
