Axiall Corp. on Monday said Westlake, La., is the preferred location for a proposed $2 billion ethane cracker. An Axiall spokesman told the Lake Charles, La., American Press the company has filed for a wetlands permit application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and that the project is in the front-end engineering and design phase.
Axiall in February signed an agreement with South Korean firm Lotte Chemical to partner on the design, construction and operation of the plant. If the ethane cracker project is approved, Lotte Chemical will also build and operate a monoethylene glycol facility adjacent to the plant. If approved, the ethane cracker will begin commercial operation in 2018.
