Southern Co. CEO Tom Fanning told reporters today his company is evaluating six possible sites for new nuclear reactors. Via Platts, Fanning said the units would be similar to the two 1,150-megawatt reactor units Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power is building at its Vogtle site. Fanning said he hopes to announce a new nuclear plant by the end of this year.
The first new unit at Vogtle is expected to come online at the end of 2017, with the second starting up a year later.
