The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the construction of two new nuclear reactors at Nuclear Innovation North America’s (NINA) South Texas Project site near Bay City. The existing site, which is jointly operated by NRG Energy, CPS Energy and Austin Energy, already has two nuclear reactors that went online in the late ‘80s.
FuelFix notes that the new reactors are unlikely to be built anytime soon given the project’s costs and low power prices in Texas. The application for the expansion was originally filed in 2007.
NINA is 90% owned by NRG and 10% owned by Toshiba.
