Formosa Plastics will postpone a five-week turnaround at its Point Comfort, Texas, facility that was set to begin next month, Platts reports. A source at Formosa said tightening ethylene supply was the primary reason for delaying the planned turnaround of the Olefins 1 steam cracker at Point Comfort. The company did not give a new startup date. Platts noted that other producers such as Dow Chemical and Chevron Phillips have delayed turnarounds recently due to ethylene supply concerns.
Formosa earlier this month secured key EPA permits to add a third olefins unit at the Point Comfort facility. The upgrade would increase the Point Comfort plant’s ethylene production capacity to approximately 1.75 million tonnes per year.
