Chevron became the first company certified under a voluntary third-party environmental review that assesses shale oil and gas drilling operations in the Appalachian Basin. Independent auditors determined Chevron Appalachia met 15 environmental performance standards outlined by the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD).
CSSD’s performance standards for air and climate minimization of flaring, use of green completions, reduced engine emissions and emission controls on storage tanks. Companies seeking CSSD certification must also maximize water recycling, perform groundwater monitoring and reduce the toxicity of fracturing fluids used, among other water-protection measures.
A team from Bureau Veritas conducted a full-scale certification audit of Chevron’s operations in June. The auditors visited 22 Chevron sites in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.
The certification is valid for one year, after which Chevron can apply for renewal.
