The United Steelworkers union said little progress was made during Tuesday’s contract renewal talks with lead industry negotiator Shell. Via Reuters, the union claimed Shell failed to supply information that was promised when talks broke down last week. Shell, however, said it is “working in good faith” to produce the data the union requested.
The union has proposed to eliminate non-union contracts and add workers at refineries and chemical plants to increase operational safety. Shell refused any language that would prevent owners from staffing their facilities as they see fit, the union said.
The work stoppage has affected 11 petrochemical and refining sites, and approximately 5,400 workers are on strike.
