The Obama Administration today announced it would change the way it reviews LNG export approval applications. Via Reuters, the Department of Energy (DOE) will only make decisions on whether or not an LNG export proposal is in the public interest after the project has undergone a final environmental review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). An administration official said this would prioritize projects that are more commercially advanced, thus speeding up the process. Reuters notes that the FERC process can cost as much as $100 million, while applying for a DOE permit costs only $20,000.
