Representatives Pete Olson (R-Texas) and Cedric Richmond (D-La.) on Wednesday formally launched the House Refinery Caucus — a group of lawmakers who will educate their peers in Congress on issues facing the refining industry. A statement released by Olson said site visits and briefings would be a part of the House Refinery Caucus.
Olson said unlike more easily understood topics such as drilling and pipelines, the refining process is “mostly a mystery” to many Americans.
“Your average American probably couldn’t identify a picture of [a refinery],” Olson said. “Few people know how refineries work or how they operate or even when they are located. They rarely make headlines, but when they do, it is for the wrong reasons. And yet here they are, a keystone of our economy.”
The House Refinery Caucus will also help Americans understand “how Washington impacts the downstream,” Olson said.
