Achieving operational milestones: Saving time with AlkeGel

Industrial operators are under increasing pressure to improve efficiency while maintaining safety, performance and asset integrity.

Insulation systems that are difficult to fabricate, slow to install or labor-intensive can directly affect schedules and uptime. AlkeGel, Alkegen's fiber-enhanced aerogel insulation platform, is engineered to address these challenges by delivering high thermal performance with faster, cleaner and more predictable installation.

Designed with a proprietary scrim backing, AlkeGel allows installers to easily mark, cut and fabricate patterns for elbows, gores, valves and tees. Its lightweight construction improves handling and maneuverability, reducing labor time and installer fatigue, particularly when working around complex geometries on pipes, vessels and tanks.

Compared to traditional aerogel blankets, studies show AlkeGel generates up to 80% less dust, minimizing cleanup during and after installation and reducing contamination of tools, eyewear and surrounding work areas. In many cases, secondary dust containment is not required, allowing other trades to continue working without disruption and supporting tighter project coordination.

AlkeGel also streamlines multi-layer installation. The scrim backing promotes smooth transitions between layers, reducing friction and tension during application for faster, more consistent results. Installation efficiency is further improved by eliminating the need for wire ties every 6 to 12 inches; instead, the material can be secured using tape in a "candy cane" wrap, significantly reducing material handling steps and installation time.

Minimal personal protective equipment is required in most applications, as AlkeGel does not typically require Tyvek® suits or respiratory protection during fabrication or installation. This reduces heat stress, PPE-related delays and fatigue-related slowdowns, particularly in warmer operating environments. The material's thicker, fiber-reinforced design, up to 20mm thick, requires fewer layers compared to other traditional aerogel technologies to achieve required thermal performance. When paired with Alkegen's installation guidelines, projects can be completed up to 20% faster than conventional aerogel systems, helping facilities return to service sooner and significantly reducing installation costs.

Beyond installation efficiency, AlkeGel delivers consistent, ultra-low thermal conductivity with uniform heat flow, helping reduce hot spots and energy losses. The insulation is hydrophobic and engineered for durability, supporting long-term performance in harsh industrial environments. In acoustic applications, AlkeGel eliminates the need for mass-loaded vinyl by embedding sound attenuation directly into the insulation, reducing system weight, labor and complexity.

The AlkeGel product family supports a wide range of operating conditions. AlkeGel Ember is designed for mid- to high-temperature applications common in refining, petrochemical and power generation facilities. AlkeGel Fyre combines thermal insulation with passive fire protection to help mitigate fire CUI. For cryogenic environments, AlkeGel Glacier is engineered for LNG and extreme cold applications, incorporating an integrated vapor seal the system from ambient vapor ingress.

These performance benefits also support sustainability goals by improving system efficiency and reducing energy consumption and associated GHG emissions. Backed by Alkegen's decades of expertise in fiber chemistry and thermal management, AlkeGel offers a practical insulation solution for industrial operators focused on safety, efficiency and reliability.
