Shell may retire coking unit at Martinez refinery

Shell is considering retiring one of two coking units at its Martinez, Calif., refinery as it seeks to process more light crude from U.S. shale plays, Bloomberg reports. The company has applied to local authorities for a permit to shut down its flexicoker, which would reduce the plant’s heavy oil processing and cut GHG emissions by 15%. A Shell spokeswoman said the company would keep its delayed coking unit in service.
