New York nuclear power plant fire causes oil spill

A transformer fire at a nuclear power plant in New York caused thousands of gallons of oil to spill into the Hudson River over the weekend. Via the Associated Press, Entergy Corp.’s Indian Point 3 plant, located about 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan, could remain shut down for weeks following the fire.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said oil from the transformer overflowed a holding tank and entered the river through a discharge drain. The state Department of Environmental Protection has set up booms over an area of the river 300 feet in diameter to contain the spill. Entergy said the reactor itself is safe and stable. On-site personnel and a sprinkler system extinguished the fire.
