DEER PARK, Texas — Elected officials, community leaders, volunteers and citizens celebrated the grand opening of the Wheelhouse’s new building at 210 W. Helgra in Deer Park. The new building, which sits next to the site of the former facility and was built through community support and contributions, nearly doubles the capacity. An estimated 2,000 men are expected this year to seek assistance at the Wheelhouse to overcome drug or alcohol addictions.
The celebration allowed visitors to enjoy lunch and meet current residents, tour the facility and listen to testimonials from men who have been through the Wheelhouse and achieved sobriety. These testimonials included success stories from men currently serving on the Wheelhouse Board of Trustees.
Deer Park Mayor Jerry Mouton attended the event and spoke to the crowd. “You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, which currently shines upon the Wheelhouse,” said Mouton about those involved with the Wheelhouse. “Deer Park is very blessed to have men and women like you and a place like the Wheelhouse to help those in need.”
Ralph Russo, chairman of the Wheelhouse Board, stepped in front of the podium to offer thanks to those who helped the new facility become a reality. “The Wheelhouse is so grateful for all those who helped us get to be where are standing today,” said Russo. “Countless amounts of people contributed to this new building by donating their money, time and abilities. I thank everyone for their generosity. You are helping to change men’s lives.”
