Marathon Petroleum Senior Vice President Rich Bedell will retire in March and will be succeeded by Galveston Bay, Texas, refinery manager Raymond L. Brooks, the company announced Thursday. Bedell joined Marathon in 1979 and later served as general manager of the company’s refineries in Garyville, Louisiana, Robinson, Illinois, and Texas City, Texas, before moving into his current post in 2010.
Marathon CEO Gary Heminger said Bedell was “instrumental in transforming our refineries into the flexible, integrated system they are today.” During Bedell's tenure as head of refining, Marathon purchased the Galveston Bay refinery from BP, completed a major project to process heavy oil at its Detroit refinery and launched plans to integrate the Galveston Bay and Texas City refineries.
Brooks is a 33-year veteran of Marathon who has served as general manager of the Robinson site and Marathon’s formerly owned St. Paul Park, Minnesota, refinery, which is now part of Northern Tier Energy. He has also held senior management positions at Marathon’s corporate office in Findlay, Ohio, and its refineries in Texas City and Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He has a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from the University of New Orleans.
