According to Rodney Greenup, president and CEO of Greenup Industries, the company is very proud of its trading house services contract with Shell Oil Co., under which it provides downstream maintenance services.
"In a nutshell, this means the contracts and procurement personnel at Shell use Greenup Industries as the 'easy button' to access approximately 500 different vendors that provide a variety of services inside and outside the gates," Greenup said. "If a vendor doesn't have a contract to perform services for Shell refineries, then there's a good possibility we can help it at least get qualified to work with any Shell refinery in the Gulf of Mexico."
On a daily basis, Greenup's staff pre-qualifies dozens of vendors for Shell and Motiva refineries, executing contract agreements with the vendors. Greenup's main priority is to ensure all vendors executing work at either of the facilities are meeting or exceeding the safety standards established by the clients. The company's field staff escorts vendors on-site to perform work and supervises these services completed outside production units.
"We submit vendor invoices for approval, and we pay vendors according to the terms of our contract agreements," Greenup explained. "What has really set us apart lately is we are working every day inside of four good-sized refineries. So if a vendor was only working in one location last year and it performed well, we can shop its services to the other plants without the vendor doing any marketing or outreach."
Greenup stated the company has numerous examples of vendors starting out at one facility and completing work through Greenup Industries at other facilities within its network. "It makes good business sense, fast-tracks the schedule and helps us grow small, local companies that may not have a sales force," Greenup said.
In response to clients' demands, Greenup Industries also provides fully integrated, turnkey supply chain support for upstream and downstream customers.
"We provide these services at a very competitive rate because all customers want turnkey services, but they don't want to pay too much extra for the convenience," Greenup said. "Our fee for service markup as a percentage on average has steadily declined every year since inception. This means we provide the same or better service for about half the overall cost we were charging four years ago."
Greenup stated he sees an opportunity to further reduce those costs for the company's customers by leveraging in-house tools to grow the list of qualified vendors and bid work more competitively.
"There are also cost savings associated with early payment discounts and bulk purchase agreements for materials that are not being actively pursued," he said. "At the end of the day, Greenup's job is to represent the client and make sure the work is being accomplished safely, cost-effectively and with great quality.
But we also want to be sure to identify and foster good relationships with vendors so they grow and prosper year over year. We are the guys and girls in the middle, making sure both sides get what they need to survive. 'The art of good business is being a good middleman.'"
Greenup Industries awarded Supplier of the Year
One of Greenup Industries' most significant achievements this past year was being awarded the Supplier of the Year award for Tier III at The Gateway Impact Awards Ceremony for 2016.
Greenup accepted the award, which celebrates outstanding certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) partnerships with member corporations. MBE businesses are nominated by member corporations and compete for the Supplier of the Year award in four major categories. The local competition hosted by the Southern Region Minority Supplier Development Council considers MBEcertified businesses in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas.
Local winners receive awards, prestigious business scholarships, special recognition, and compete in the regional and national competition for the National Minority Supplier Development Council Supplier of the Year award.
"Greenup Industries is proud to be an MBE-certified business serving the Gulf," Greenup said. Being recognized and awarded for the work our team does is an incredible honor, and we thank the Southern Region Minority Supplier Development Council for considering our efforts.â
