UPDATE: Reuters reports that BP successfully reduced wastewater discharge to permitted levels at its Whiting refinery on Thursday.
BP has been working to stem an excessive flow of wastewater into Lake Michigan since last Friday, the Associated Press reports. An operational issue has resulted in approximately five times the allowed volumes of total suspended solids flowing into the lake. BP stressed that the discharge does not involve hydrocarbons, and local authorities said it does not affect people, drinking water or marine life.
