Michael Smith, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder at Freeport LNG, does not believe natural gas can accurately be called a bridge fuel — at least, not yet.
“It is the one that’s right here, right now, and it will be the dominant fuel for as long as we can sustain it,” Smith said, addressing delegates at CERAWeek by IHS Markit held recently in Houston, Texas. Smith admitted a time will come, eventually, when natural gas will be called a bridge fuel to renewables. “One day, sure, we will have to have a renewables economy around the world. But in my lifetime, and my children’s lifetime, gas is here and it’s here to stay.”
Torgrim Reitan, Executive Vice President, Development and Production USA for Statoil and Al Monoco, President and Chief Executive Officer at Enbridge joined Smith in the conference’s Upstream and Ministerial Dialogue titled “North America’s Gas Future.” Raoul LeBlanc, Vice President, North American Unconventionals for IHS Markit moderated the session.
