A new combined-cycle, natural-gas-fueled electric power station in southeastern Ontario, Canada, has been under construction since last spring, with an estimated completion date of December 2017.
The plant will be a flexible power resource, starting and stopping as needed, depending on Ontario’s overall electricity demand. This flexibility will help increase power stability across the entire province. Once in operation, the new plant will be able to generate over 900 megawatts of electricity through two gas turbine generator sets and a steam turbine-generator set. When complete, the plant will comprise 10 buildings, including housings for the generators and turbines as well as water treatment facilities.
That’s a lot of construction. And to handle such a complex job, you need a lot of equipment and the right people behind the wheels.
The contractor overseeing plant construction knew this massive project would require reliable cranes of widely varying capacities from a fleet owner that could help with scheduling both the human and equipment resources. It called ALL Canada Rental Corp., a member of the ALL Family of Companies. ALL has the expansive fleet that’s perfectly suited for these types of multiyear power industry jobs.
ALL is providing a full package of cranes and operators for the project, with 16 cranes currently on the site.
Work began in May 2015 and has since included a Manitowoc 18000 crawler crane tasked to hoist the steel panels and steam drums for the plant’s heat recovery steam generator unit. The 18000 was equipped to full capacity, 825 tons (USt)/750 metric tons (mt), with its MAX-ER. In addition, three Manitowoc 2250 crawlers (300 Ust/272 mt) have been on-site assisting with the plant’s steel erection. Eight rough-terrain cranes, including four Grove RT890Es (90 Ust/82 mt) and two Grove RT875Es (75 Ust/68mt), are assisting with pipe installation. Two 15-USt Broderson carry-deck cranes are working inside the plant, handling challenging lifts that require agility and flexibility in tight spots.
Operators for a Manitowoc 999 (275 Ust/250mt) and those for a couple of the rough-terrain cranes have been called upon to work overnight shifts — whatever is needed to maintain the customer’s production schedule. ALL is also providing a project supervisor, a safety representative and a full-time mechanic.
This is the dedication and skill you get with the ALL Family of Companies. With more than 50 years of experience, ALL is a trusted partner to many in the power industry. With ALL, you can count on being able to get as many cranes as you need to handle the heaviest lifts, the tightest, most challenging lifts and everything in between — for the long haul.
