Eleven contract workers were injured Tuesday morning when a boiler at Axiall’s chemical plant in Natrium, West Virginia, released steam and ash. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported three of the workers were treated and released from local hospitals and three others were being held for observation. Information on the other five was not available. A report filed by an emergency dispatcher said workers had suffered second-degree burns and dust inhalation injuries. Axiall did not reveal the name of the company they were working for.
An Axiall spokesman said there was no chemical release from the incident, nor was there a significant release of steam.
Located along the Ohio River, the Natrium plant produces chlorine and caustic soda.
