Beginning in the fall of 2016, the Maxim Crane Works team was contracted to perform the centerline heavy rigging scope on the Caithness Moxie Freedom energy project in northeastern Pennsylvania for Gemma Power Systems. The Moxie Freedom energy project involved the construction of a 1,028-MW natural gas-fired power plant, which consisted of twin combined- cycle, single-shaft power blocks. Each power block included gas turbine, generator and steam turbine centerline equipment.
Maxim Crane's scope included the receipt of each major turbine and generator component under its gantry hook at the project site. This included two 593,000- pound gas turbines, two 925,000-pound generators, two 225,000-pound high-pressure turbine assemblies and two 380,000- pound intermediate-pressure/low-pressure turbine assemblies. Each major component was unloaded from Maxim Crane's hydraulic platform trailer, traversed and placed over foundation pedestals by using the company's 700-ton hydraulic gantry system.
The sequence of events included the rough setting of both gas turbines on each power block before the staging of the generator stators. This allowed the OEM to final assemble, inserting each rotor with Maxim Crane's 300-ton all-terrain crane. Once the generators were assembled, each was rough set with Maxim Crane's 700-ton gantry to make way for the receipt of the high-pressure and low-pressure turbine assemblies.
By the end of the first quarter, the Maxim Crane team safely and efficiently completed the heavy rigging scope, rough setting six turbines and two generators on each power block. The project was completed in lock-step with the OEM schedule for all component deliveries .
"On behalf of the Maxim Crane project rigging team, I would like to thank the field leadership team at Gemma, Moxie Energy and Caithness for their tremendous support on this project," stated Maxim Crane Project Rigging and Heavy Transport Manager Allen Wenturine. "Without their hard work and diligent efforts, we would not have been able to execute our scope effectively."
Through the combined efforts and teamwork of Maxim Crane and Gemma Power Systems, all considered the "power island equipment" heavy rigging scope of the Caithness Moxie Freedom energy project a huge success.
