New wind energy construction announcements surged 23% between the first and second quarters of 2016, according to a new report by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). AWEA said there is now 18,200 megawatts of wind energy capacity now under construction or in advanced stages of development. In the second quarter, major utilities announced plans to develop and own up to 2,600 megawatts of new capacity. New construction announcements in the quarter totaled 3,000 megawatts.
Texas led the country in new capacity installed in the second quarter with 200 megawatts, followed by Kansas (72 megawatts), Nebraska (36 megawatts) and Iowa (one turbine installed).
