BP today said it started up a water injection project at its Thunder Horse platform in the Gulf of Mexico that will over time add 65 million barrels of oil to its production. BP has spent the past three years refurbishing the platform’s topsides and subsea equipment while simultaneously drilling two water injection wells.
It is the second of five major upstream projects BP is planning to start up this year. BP in February announced the startup of a joint venture natural gas project in Algeria it co-owns with Sonatrach and Statoil. The British firm has set a goal of adding 800,000 barrels of oil per day of production between 2015 and 2020.
