WorkSite Lighting is known across the country as an innovator in portable hazardous-location lighting, but it has just brought to market a different kind of light that can help virtually any business, facility or municipality save thousands of dollars in energy costs. The Variable High Power LED Area Light is a breakthrough in LED (light-emitting diode) technology, producing an unheard-of 190 lumens per watt of bright, near-natural light. The energy-saving potential of this new LED is game-changing, as the Variable High Power LED is 80-percent more efficient than standard area lights and 50-percent more efficient than other LEDs.
“Our goal as a company has always been to leverage new technology to enhance safety for workers,” said WorkSite Lighting CEO Bill Matthews. “But in the process of developing our portable hazardous-location LED lighting, we saw an opportunity to bring next-generation LED area lighting to businesses and municipalities. We are very excited about what this product can do, because it has the potential to make a real difference, both in cost savings and lighting quality.”
The Variable High Power LED Area light has the potential to completely replace standard lighting fixtures, which consume energy at a costly rate and provide low-quality lighting compared to what the Variable High Power LED offers. A 1,000-watt metal halide light, for example, can be replaced by a 160-watt Variable High Power LED, which provides the same level of light in a more vision-friendly spectrum. The effect on a facility’s budget is profound when considering the number of lights a plant, refinery, hospital, parking garage or commercial retail outlet requires. For example, a facility with 100 metal halide lights running at 1,000 watts 24 hours a day would spend $96,300 in electricity charges just for those lights every year, assuming 11 cents per kilowatt-hour (the average rate for Texas). A conversion to 240-watt LEDs would provide the same level of light at a cost of $23,100 per year. But 100 Variable High Power LEDs at 160 watts would cost only $15,400 in electricity charges per year, while providing better lighting. That’s a savings of $80,900 every year!
WorkSite Lighting’s Variable High Power LED is more than just a cost-saver, though. In addition to being the world’s most efficient LED, it also represents a new generation of performance and design in LED lighting. The Variable High Power LED is “variable” because it is a modular design. The unit consists of one to six LED light bars, each consuming only 40 watts per bar. Because the unit is modular, customers can decide for themselves how much light is needed from any particular unit while creating a lighting plan. A single light bar unit can deliver 7,600 lumens, equivalent to a 250-watt metal halide lamp. A six-light bar unit consumes only 240 watts of power and delivers a staggering 45,600 lumens.
What’s more, the light bars can be turned inside the unit, aiming light exactly where it is needed most. There is almost no wasted light, no hot spots and no dark spots on a floorplan. This feature is ideal for facilities where shadow elimination is critical for safety, security and aesthetics. The bars are easily turned, removed and replaced with a simple screwdriver. This means should anything ever go wrong with the unit, the entire frame does not need to be removed, saving valuable maintenance costs.
“The modular design of the light is one of its smartest features,” said WorkSite Lighting Director of Marketing Scott Madere. “The unit is virtually maintenance-free as it is, but knowing that you won’t need to remove the unit to service it or deal with proprietary mountings is a relief for people who want to keep maintenance to a minimum. How many times have you seen a parking lot with several lights out, and it’s not replaced for months? There’s no chance of that happening here. Even if one light bar goes down, the rest of the unit still works,” he said.
Each WorkSite Lighting Variable High Power LED unit is rated for 100,000 hours (more than 11 years) of use and under warranty for five years. The Variable High Power LED is IP66 rated and storm-resistant. Its frame is capable of withstanding 26 gallons of water a minute, which is particularly useful for facilities frequented by tropical weather systems and severe thunderstorms.
The Variable High Power LED Area Light also features an angular adjustable pole mount, which allows users to set the fixture exactly as needed. Installing the unit requires no new poles or changes to the power structure of existing facilities, which lowers installation cost and time. The LED optics are also available in multiple angles, from 10 to 120 degrees, ensuring the unit can adapt to any layout and lighting plan.
When it comes to quality of light, WorkSite Lighting’s Variable High Power LED shows it is again in a league of its own. With a color index rating (CRI) of 95 percent, the Variable High Power LED is the closest light to natural sunlight on the market. As a reference, most LEDs rate 80-percent similar to natural light, while metal halide (65 percent) and fluorescent (40 percent) fall well short of natural quality. This is important for situations where blue or yellow tinting of light is undesirable, such as environments where inspection is necessary or color display is critical. With the Variable High Power LED, all colors appear as they should, creating a safer environment for employees and a better experience for customers and visitors. Tests also show that 95 percent of light produced by the Variable High Power LED reaches the ground, another world-leading category of performance. The Variable High Power LED is also Dark Sky compliant and reduces light pollution.
WorkSite Lighting’s team of lighting experts works with customers to create the best lighting plan for their businesses, whether the lighting is interior or exterior. Each lighting consultation begins with an audit, in which a facility’s lighting profile is observed and energy usage is calculated. This process reduces assumptions and guesswork, and sets the numbers by which the lighting plan is constructed. It also outlines the timeframe for return on investment, which is assured by the energy savings of LED conversion.
In addition to the new Variable High Power LED Area Light, WorkSite Lighting also offers a full array of other LED lights for facilities, including LED panels, LED tube lights, LED high bays and even LED bulbs for simple conversions. “Getting started with an LED conversion is not as difficult a process as it sounds,” said Madere. “All it takes is a phone call, and we can meet with you for a no-obligation consultation. We will be happy to show you the math on how our LEDs are the best in the world. It’s not an exaggeration. There’s truly nothing like this LED on the market, and we can’t wait to show you what it can do for you.”
