Shell today said it discovered more than 125 million barrels of oil equivalent in its Fort Sumter well in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The well was drilled in Mississippi Canyon Block 566, located approximately 73 miles southeast of New Orleans. Shell has discovered approximately 1.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico since 2010, including its Appomattox, Vicksburg and Rydberg discoveries.
Shell’s deepwater workforce, however, is contracting amid the oil market downturn. Earlier this week the company said it was cutting 200 out of its 770 Gulf of Mexico employees and contractors.
