As director of Gulf Coast operations for Stork, A Fluor Company, Bob Frawley oversees the maintenance, modification and asset integrity services Stork delivers to clients across the Gulf Coast. BIC Magazine recently sat down with Frawley to learn more about the experiences that have enabled him to progress to this exciting point in his career.
Q: What led to your position at Stork?
A: My father instilled a strong work ethic I have carried with me throughout my 30-plus-year career in construction. I’ve worked in the refining, petrochemical and power industries, managing both turnarounds and construction projects. I’ve had the privilege to work with some talented individuals who have afforded me opportunities to stretch beyond what I believed I could do. Because so many people took the time to invest in me, I’m extremely passionate about training others so we have a strong pipeline of leaders in construction.
Q: What is the biggest news at Stork right now?
A: Our biggest news has to be Fluor’s acquisition of Stork. In March, we joined forces to build a world leader in maintenance, modifications and asset integrity services. We now employ over 60,000 people in more than 100 countries and partner with over 4,000 clients to deliver projects ranging from turnarounds, shutdowns and sustaining capital work to some of the world’s most challenging client programs. The addition of Stork allows us to offer specialty services such as heat treatment, specialty welding, machining and bolt torqueing, and special access systems, to name a few. The combined knowledge and experience we bring to the industry are incredible.
Q: Are you looking to grow or expand in new markets?
A: Absolutely. By combining Stork’s specialty services with Fluor’s strength and depth, we’ve developed a robust integrated service offering for our clients. We are currently in the process of expanding Stork’s expertise, services and workforce throughout the Gulf Coast. We understand a key to our markets is a strong local presence, and we’ve made the commitment to opening facilities in prime locations throughout the Gulf region. These locations will allow clients to call on a local and dependable team they know they can trust for their maintenance needs.
Q: How do you maintain a good work/home balance?
A: This is not easy for me, and I know I’m not alone. In today’s world of technology and dependency on all our devices, it’s hard to make that separation. My family is extremely important to me; when I’m at home, I work hard at focusing on my family rather than tweaking that report one last time. Thankfully I’m surrounded by a strong team, so a work/life balance is possible for everyone on our team.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote?
A: Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” I believe this quote applies to almost everything we do. Whether talking about craft, staff or even our kids, it is our obligation to engage people in the activities we want them to learn. I’m proud to be part of a company that works tirelessly to train and develop craft and resources. It helps deliver better, safer projects for our clients; enrich the lives of our people; and make our clients and our company stronger.
