Dow Chemical entered an agreement to supply its Freeport, Texas, site with 200 megawatts of wind power per year from a farm being developed by Bordas Wind Energy in South Texas. The 35,000-acre wind farm is set to be complete in the first quarter of 2016. Dow will become the first company in the U.S. to power a manufacturing site with renewable energy at such a scale. The deal will also make Dow the third-largest corporate buyer of wind energy in the U.S. The company has set a goal of securing 400 megawatts of clean power by 2025.
The Department of Energy said in a recent report wind power could supply 20% of America’s electricity by 2030 pending cost competitiveness with fossil fuels, government support and lower equipment costs.
