Twenty-one cars of a train carrying crude derailed in rural Montana Thursday, and at least three of them leaked oil. Via the Associated Press, there were no reports of injuries or fire, but some homes were evacuated. Local authorities said this morning the oil had been contained. It is not yet known if the train was carrying crude from the Bakken region — an area that has leaned heavily on rail transport due to a lack of pipeline infrastructure.
The U.S. and Canada in May jointly issued new safety standards for transporting crude oil by rail that require upgraded safety features and thicker shells.
